Character: Oerba Yun Fang
Series: Final Fantasy XIII
Age: Physically she is 21, but at her pull point she is chronologically 521 years old.
History: here
Canon Point: End of the game SPOILER [ after she’s been encased in the crystal pillar holding up Cocoon with Vanille.]

Personality: Above everything else, Fang is a strong willed individual, who never backs down from a fight, no matter who the opponent. She adores fighting and is incredibly skilled in spear and hand-to-hand combat, and has been getting into scrapes since she was a child. She’s the type of person who’s not really concerned with the trivialities of life, and tends to be very focused at the task at hand.

She can be very blunt and straightforward, and if she doesn’t like you she’ll tell you as much. And you better hope she doesn’t dislike you, because Fang can be incredibly quick to anger, and holds grudges for a very long time. She’s also incredibly stubborn and unmoving when her mind has been made up, and even the people closest to her can rarely change her mind. Her first impressions of people will often be her final impression of people.

A part of her stubbornness transfers over to her fighting in that she never backs down. Though this can help her, it also hinders her, as she will try and take on opponents far stronger than she can handle on her own, and will often reject help from others, wanting to do it by herself. She finds it hard to ask for help when she gets herself into these situations, and would rather carry on fighting. She has a fearless attitude when it comes to fighting, and never backs down, no matter what the opponent. She enjoys fighting, and loves a good challenge, often getting bored with enemies that are easy to kill, and saying things like ‘Didn’t even break a sweat’ almost in disappointment.

Fang can also be sarcastic and teasing, and will often make remarks to dig at a person, but they are almost always said with a smirk. She's incredibly flirtatious too, and is rather smug about causing people unease when she flirts with them although she doesn’t try to cause unease intentionally. She is undiscriminating, and flirts with anything with a pretty face, though her flirting rarely goes further than words and slight touching, at least with people who aren’t Vanille.

Underneath this strong, stubborn, flirtatious young woman, there is a compassionate side. She cares deeply for her party member Vanille, and puts Vanille’s well being well above her own. She would risk everything to save Vanille to the point where she would hurt others to ensure her safety. Because of this deep compassion for Vanille, Fang is very self-sacrificing. She’d rather go through torture—both emotional and physical—than see Vanille be forced to do something she was scared to do. She thinks it is her personal job to keep Vanille safe, and will do what is best for her, even if it hurting her to keep her safe (she abandons Vanille so she can escape a building without getting attacked, taking care of the guards herself, and almost attacks Vanille herself to stop her from throwing away her focus and turning into a monster).

Fang finds it hard to talk in depth about her feelings with people who aren’t very close to her. She doesn’t like to open up very much, and hides her doubt and sadness under her attitude. She doesn’t really know how to articulate what she feels, and often uses physical acts rather than her words (smashing a door when she’s angry or frustrated etc).

Skills and Abilities: As Fang is a l’Cie she has skills that normal humans, both Pulsian and Cocoon Citizens, don’t possess. Usually this mostly focused in magical abilities, but being a l’Cie boosts her strength and dexterity. She has immense strength, and can throw heavy objects and opponents into the air using her spear, and can jump as high as she can throw them to deliver a devastating mid-air attack. She can also use debuffing magic—a type of magic that’s sole purpose is to weaken the enemies’ defences and inhibit their abilities to make it easier for the warriors to slay.

Her weapon of choice is a double bladed lance, which she uses in a jabbing, slashing manner, and is extremely well versed in lance fighting. She can also fight hand to hand when she needs to and she is capable of taking hits that would normally cause major damage to the weaker members of the team.

She can also summon the power of an Eidolon, a magical creature that can be summoned into battle when they are most needed, thanks to the goddess Etro who gives wayward l'Cie Eidolons to help them find their way. Fang’s Eidolon is called Bahamut and uses physical, non elemental attacks, and can transform into a dragon-esque creature who can fly which Fang can ride and unleash devastating attacks from the back of.

Being specifically a Pulse l’Cie, Fang can take the form of the mythological creature Ragnarok in order to ‘bring about the obliteration of Cocoon’. Fang has turned into an ‘incomplete’ Ragnarok several times, not wanting Vanille to have to bear the burden, even though the transformation needs two to be anywhere near strong enough to destroy Cocoon. The creature is insanely strong, and held up an entire planet, dived into magma and killed a ‘God’ in it’s complete form. Fang has no intention of taking this form ever again, but the potential is there if she is made angry and is desperate enough for salvation. It’s hideously unlikely though.

Setting:

Fang's world is incredibly different to ours. She was brought up on a planet called Gran Pulse, which is almost similar to outback Australia in it's landscapes and it's wildlife. It ranges from wide gorges, massive lakes, marshlands, deserts, grasslands and beautiful rainforest. You name it Pulse has it. Pulse is also filled to the brim with all types of critters that want to kill you (much like Australia in that regard too). I'm not even joking, there's monster wolves, monster birds, giant turtles, mountains that move and can eat the giant turtles, giant man-eating plants and dragons galore, all of which are super-charged, massive and all with a taste for blood. It's a pretty harsh environment--untamed and wild--and the people that make it their home are very much similar in that respect. Fang is from a village called Oerba, in the remote north of Gran Pulse where the ocean touches the land. A large group of tribes all joined together and settled there, making it their home. They all adopted the last name Oerba, but kept their tribal names, Fang being from the Yun clan, which is why her full name is Oerba Yun Fang. They lived a simple lifestyle, living off of the land, only using what they need and had technology similar to modern day earth. Things like wind farms, toy robots and trains were common in more permanent villages, but it was meagre, nothing too fancy or overly complex--more so items to help them survive than fancy machinery and glitzy unnecessary luxuries. The village prospered all thanks to the patron fal'Cie, Anima, which watched over them, and kept all the wildlife out.

Within Fang's world, the fal'Cie are almost like gods, keepers of humankind and are prayed to and given offerings in return for good weather, good crops or good hunts. Some control the weather, some control food production, others simply tend to their human pets and keep them safe. However, their power is finite and the Gods of this world, Bhunivelze, Pulse and Lindzei, usually craft them for a singular purpose, only given the powers and means to meet that end. However, they are able to lend their powers to others, branding them and giving them great physical and magical power all to complete a set Focus, something that is beyond the fal'Cie's own powers. These are called l'Cie and are usually humans thrust into an age long battle, used as pawns when the fal'Cie can't move from their own vestiges. The fal'Cie use humans because their potential is limitless, and they push, endure and grow stronger, whereas the fal'Cie can only use the power they have.

When a person becomes a l'Cie, a shard of crystal infests their bodies and they are literally branded with a mark and given visions of what they must do to complete their 'Focus'. This is the task set by the fal'Cie for the l'Cie to carry out. This can range from getting certain people to a certain place at a certain time, killing a specific monster, retrieving an item or as Fang knows it, destroying a world. If a l'Cie fails to complete their Focus within the time given, they will be transformed into a horrific crystallised monster known as a Cie'th, and are to forever wander the world, with no memories of their previous life. When a l'Cie completes their Focus, the crystal engulfs them completely, and they are granted 'eternal life' by turning to crystal where they hibernate within until awakened when another Focus is needed to be completed. The catch is that the Focus is never spelled out for the l'Cie, and they are often only shown glimpses of what they need to do, and have to decode it themselves, which can lead to a lot of l'Cie simply turning Cie'th because they didn't know how to solve their Focus.

All in all, being a l'Cie isn't really that great and just trying to complete your Focus tends to be the lesser of two evils. You do get the bonus that you're able to do magic and granted great strength to help complete the Focus, but really, that's not much of a bonus considering you're being enslaved by deities with master plans that go way above your pay grade.

Master plans I hear you ask? What could the Gods be planning? Well, let me tell you. Upon the creation of Gran Pulse and the subsequent creation of humankind thanks to the goddess, Etro, the God Lindzei was said to have decided that Gran Pulse was far too dangerous for the fragile creatures of mankind, so he created his own artificial world, Cocoon, and his own fal'Cie for that world. The fal'Cie here run everything, from the artificial sun keeping the planetoid warm, to cultivating land and providing food and water and also actually keeping the planetoid afloat. Compared to Gran Pulse, Cocoon has far more fal'Cie in charge of humankind, over eight million in fact.

Cocoon floats close to Gran Pulse and can be seen on the horizon day or night like a low-hanging moon. Although the planet looks solid, it's actually hollowed out and the inhabitants live within the outer-shell, protected from supposed intruders from the planet below. Unlike Gran Pulse, Cocoon is a futuristic paradise, filled with highly advanced technology and has a far denser population than that of the world below, numbering higher than ten million. There are no where near as many monsters located in Cocoon, as most of them have often been fused with technology allowing the Sanctum, the government and law enforcers of Cocoon, to use them to fight for them rather than against them.

Lindzei promised the people of Gran Pulse a paradise and a safe haven from all the monsters and horrors of the wilds, and lured people away to this new eden. As a result, the people who remained on Gran Pulse came to hate Cocoon and Lindzei, believing it to be a false paradise where Lindzei lured people with sweet promises only to enslave them and steal their souls. Which was actually pretty close to what was going on. Cocoon was originally designed as a sacrificial planet, that could be used to open up Etro’s gate (a gateway to the afterlife) and summon the sleeping god Bhunivelze to give him immortality, but we're getting ahead of ourselves here.

Both inhabitants of Cocoon and Gran Pulse think the worst of the other--Cocoon thinking of the lower planet as a 'hell' world, filled with monsters and savages waiting to invade their paradise and rob them of their homes, and Gran Pulse thinking that Cocoon is full of 'vipers waiting to strike', and the fal'Cie use this to their advantage to help antagonise the inhabitants so they could hope to bring an end to the world. Unable to use their own powers to destroy the world themselves, the fal'Cie of both Pulse and Cocoon had to enlist the help of humans as l'Cie, and what better way than getting your toys mad at each other than to spread lies?

The inhabitants of both worlds are pretty much oblivious to everything that's happening above them though They have no idea what the fal'Cie are planning and in the case of Cocoon, are mostly unaware of what fal'Cie actually are in charge of, other than being 'Gods'. All they know is that the opposing fal'Cie are evil and as a result, l'Cie from the opposing planet are out to murder everyone and destroy the world. It got so bad that Cocoon would actually carry out 'purges', which basically was a mass sacrifice of people who got into contact with Pulsian fal'Cie, orchestrated by a Cocoon fal'Cie called Bartandalus. He had disguised himself as the head of the Sanctum, under the veil of an elderly Primarch called Galenth Dysley to control the population the way the fal'Cie needed. The Sanctum holds supreme executive, legislative and judicial power and maintains directive authority over the military, all of which is in the hands of the Sanctum fal'Cie, manipulating the human population for their master plans.

Fights start to break out between the two worlds, and both fal'Cie used l'Cie to cause damage to the other, worlds, hoping to raise the hatred the two peoples had for each other. Fang, who was growing up in and orphanage at the time, held great resentment toward Anima, the patron fal'Cie of Oerba, for being unable to protect her and her family from the enemy Cocoon during one of these attacks, causing her to become an orphan. So when her best friend Vanille got chose by the fal'Cie to be a l'Cie, Fang demanded to the priests to be able to go with her, and offered herself to the deity and became a l'Cie herself to protect Vanille and Gran Pulse, where Anima had failed. They were given the combined Focus to join their powers and become the creature Ragnarok, and obliterate Cocoon once and for all, not knowing the full extent of the fal'Cie plans. Vanille could not handle the thought of becoming such a beast, leaving the gigantic task to Fang alone. She turned into an incomplete Ragnarok, and managed to crack Cocoon's outer shell.

She would have succeeded in destroying the world if not for the Goddess Etro, who stepped in when she realised what the fal'Cie had been planning. They wanted to sacrifice Cocoon to flood Etro's Gate with human souls and force it to open, hoping to recover Bhunivelze from his own crystal stasis in the afterlife and give him immortality. Etro, realising this would destroy the delicate balance of the universe, took pity on Cocoon and transformed both Fang and Vanille into early crystal stasis, stopping them from turning Cei'th. This and the battles and fights before it, later became known as the War of Transgression, which Cocoon eventually won.

Cocoon suffered considerable damage from the crack; the Sanctum had to salvage components from Pulse to mend it, and also intensified the citizen's fear of Gran Pulse. Gran Pulse did not fair as well as Cocoon, and whilst Fang was trapped in her crystal stasis deep within the vestige of the fal'Cie that had turned her, almost the entire human population of Gran Pulse was wiped out. The continent became overrun with monsters, outnumbering the people, though the exact reason for this mass wipeout is unknown. It's thought that the Pulsian fal'Cie left their posts, allowed the wildlife to overwhelm cities and villages. This is what happened to Oerba, and all that is left of the once prosperous village is crystal dust and empty houses.

Five hundred years after the War of Transgression, Fang is awoken from her crystal slumber once more to finish her Focus but has no memories of what had happened during her time as Ragnarok, Etro having erased it. She is sent again to carry out her original Focus, the Sanctum fal'Cie moving the entire vestige of Anima to Cocoon itself to give Fang and Vanille a better chance of destroying Cocoon from the inside out as well as an excuse for a Purge of everyone who comes into contact with the pulse fal'Cie. And not only that, but Fang and Vanille are given extra hands to help them carry out their focus, as it is obvious that the two of them failed the first time.

During the subsequent purge from Anima being discovered on Cocoon, Fang and Vanille get separated, Fang fighting her way through the vestige sending Vanille away to escape. Vanille gets caught up in the purge itself, where she meets Hope a boy caught up in the purge, and Snow, a freedom fighter, trying to stop the horrors that the government are committing. She eventually meets Lightning, a solider from the Guardian Corps, a part of the Sanctum military that doesn't directly report to them, and Sazh, an ex-pilot, who's son got turned into a Sanctum l'Cie during the purge. Their being thrown together isn't chance. Lightning's sister was also turned l'Cie and given the focus to get them all to Anima, so they could all be branded themselves. Lightning, Hope, Snow and Sazh all get turned into a pulse l'Cie, something that Cocoon citizens fear most of all, to help Fang and Vanille carry out their original focus. So the team are forced together, all having reasons to be there, without knowing Fang or Vanille's prior involvement in the War. Fang cares little for Cocoon at the start, not caring to destroy it if it would save the life of Vanille, but over the course of the game she softens, adopting the whole team as her family.

They are not alone in this task however. The Sanctum fal'Cie, have been shaking things up a lot, with purges and the awakening of Fang and Vanille, and as a result groups begin to spring up to overthrow the government. The head of one such group is Cid Raines, a captain of a Wide-Area Response Brigade, a military unit also known as the 'Cavalry', who plans to overthrow the Sanctum and hand Cocoon back to the people. Smaller groups also rise up, and Snow Villiers leads NORA, a neighbourhood watch group, turned resistance. The people are starting to fight back against the Sanctum, and the fal'Cie know it, speeding up their master plans to destroy the world in awakening Fang and Vanille to unleash Ragnarok one last time.

All in all, it's basically a story about two warring worlds and the people caught up in the middle of it being forced to fight a war that's been going on for too long and that is actually just disguised as a sacrificial massacre. The game follows Lightning, Sazh, Snow and Hope, who all become Pulse fal'Cie to help finish what Fang and Vanille started and focuses on the struggles they have trying to fight their Focus, and unraveling the plans of the fal'Cie. Fun times.

Personality:
Above everything else, Fang is a strong willed individual, who never backs down from a fight, no matter who the opponent. She adores fighting and is incredibly skilled in spear and hand-to-hand combat, and has been getting into scrapes since she was a child.

She doesn’t really know how to articulate what she feels, and often uses physical acts rather than her words (smashing a door when she’s angry or frustrated etc).

Fang wouldn't be all too surprised that she's in some sort of stasis between life and death. She's done it once before after the War of Transgression and since she had no memories of the last time, she'd probably ask people if she had been here already. She'll wonder why she's still able to hurt and feel, and perhaps get a bit suspicious, but will focus on looking for Vanille as she knows she went into crystal stasis with her and get frustrated if she can't find her.

Appearance:
Fang is a tall woman, standing at 5ft9, and though she is technically over 700 years old, she still retains the appearance of a 21 year old, the time in which she was originally encased in crystal. She has tanned skin thanks to being under the the Pulsian sun all day, and dark black hair, that's scruffy and braided all at the same time. She has a set of earrings, similar to stretchers, and lots of tribal jewellery from her clan. The most noticeable thing about her would be the massive tattoo she has on her left arm that is similarly tribal, and the white, l'Cie scar on the other. She's covered in lots of other smaller scars too, signs of her fearlessness when it comes to battle.

She wears a blue sari covered in intricate designs and borders, and a black top underneath, with several animal pelts tied to her waist. She has a belt that holds her spear in place--a double ended lance, with a red handle and intricate markings all up the shaft and blade, and on her feet she wears plain sandals.

Compared to the rest of her friends--other than Vanille--Fang looks like she's from a completely different world and time, which is entirely true. She's more accustomed to fighting beasts and wrestling chocobos for her daily bread, and is kitted out for survival, unlike her other party members who are quite obviously trying to make a fashion statement.

Abilities:
As Fang is a l’Cie she has skills that normal humans, both Pulsian and Cocoon Citizens, don’t possess.

Fang has no intention of taking this form ever again, but the potential is there if she is made angry and is desperate enough for salvation. It’s hideously unlikely though.

Inventory:
Fang will come into the game with very little on her. She will have all her clothes, some gil and a few assessories. She will be without her Eidolon crystal (which means she will not be able to summon Bahamut), but will still have her spear, as it never goes anywhere without her.

Suite:
No preference! But probably Wood or Earth, with only one floor. She doesn't take up much space and wouldn't want too much room, and would probably be out of the apartment anyway. She doesn't want anything overly fancy, and lives quite simply, much like how she would have before.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
[The last she could remember wasn't much. Mostly glimpses and fragments of memories more than actual thoughts. Glittering lights. Falling. A hand holding onto hers. And then blackness, dark and screaming. But she wasn't afraid. Fang was never afraid. Vanille had been with her this time. She could feel the other, right in her core, right up until they separated and fell again. And as the crystal inside her exploded around them, she sunk into a different darkness. A cool, peaceful embrace this time. And Vanille was still there. They had done it. They had made their own miracle and defied the fal'Cie. They had done the impossible.

Waking up in an ocean hadn't been the thing she had quite been expecting. The afterlife was a strange place and Fang didn't remember what had happened last time. It was only once she had been fished out by the kedan and placed in a cart to be taken to a city that she realised. Vanille was not here. She couldn't feel her anymore, and that sent a panic through her.

Shouting, she tried to push herself out of the cart but found her limbs rather stubborn. Which made no sense. If this was a place between worlds, like the strange creatures that were ushering her to quiet down claimed, why would she feel so drained? The only other time she felt like this was the first time she'd awoken from crystal. Her legs had felt like lead and her joints had been stiff and unwilling to move. It was only when she discovered the date had she figured out why. Five hundred years. Who knew how long she'd been sleeping this time.

Still, it made no sense. Her numb fingers curled around her spear defensively when one of the kedan asked her to calm down again. It was only because she had no energy that she didn't outright attack him. But she did ask if she had been here before. And they had been rather unhelpful in that regard.

As the cart drifted slowly off toward the city limits, Fang couldn't help but slip in and out of a light sleep. If all people who came here were taken to the city, she could start looking for Vanille there. Maybe she could ask around, see if anyone she knew were here, hoping to find answers. Something wasn't sitting right with her, but for now, it was hard to keep her eyes open, finally succumbing when the dull ache of her limbs started to ease a little.

There would be an eternity to find her. And she wouldn't stop until she did.]

Network:
Voice post
[The voice behind the post is quite distinctly female and almost Australian, but if you asked her where she was from, she'd certainly not reference down under. The voice is also a little husky, harshened by the fact she's exhausted and had a drink to help quell her anxiety. Not that she'd ever admit to it.]

Seems like this place is fulla lost people, but not the people I'm lookin' for. [she pauses, taking a long drink from a glass she's holding. She seems strained, like she's frustrated it's have to even come to this, to stretching out and asking for help, and she's hesitant to start.]

Lady Luck is not shining on me today. [she gives a wry laugh, and takes another swig from her drink.]

Listen, I don't remember if I was here last time--I don't remember anything that happened last time--but if anyone remembers me, contact me as soon as you can. Especially you, Vanille. [She's secretly hoping that Vanille is the only one who answers. She doesn't know what she'd do if anyone else she knew did. Her sacrifice would have been for nought. They could be dust in the wind for all she knew.]

'Till then, somebody recommend a good bar. If I'm gonna be stuck here, I might as well enjoy myself and right about now, I really need to punch someone.
