Character: Oerba Yun Fang
Series: Final Fantasy XIII
Age: Physically she is 21, but at her pull point she is chronologically 521 years old.
History: here
Canon Point: End of the game SPOILER [ after she’s been encased in the crystal pillar holding up Cocoon with Vanille.]
Personality: Above everything else, Fang is a strong willed individual, who never backs down from a fight, no matter who the opponent. She adores fighting and is incredibly skilled in spear and hand-to-hand combat, and has been getting into scrapes since she was a child. She’s the type of person who’s not really concerned with the trivialities of life, and tends to be very focused at the task at hand.
She can be very blunt and straightforward, and if she doesn’t like you she’ll tell you as much. And you better hope she doesn’t dislike you, because Fang can be incredibly quick to anger, and holds grudges for a very long time. She’s also incredibly stubborn and unmoving when her mind has been made up, and even the people closest to her can rarely change her mind. Her first impressions of people will often be her final impression of people.
A part of her stubbornness transfers over to her fighting in that she never backs down. Though this can help her, it also hinders her, as she will try and take on opponents far stronger than she can handle on her own, and will often reject help from others, wanting to do it by herself. She finds it hard to ask for help when she gets herself into these situations, and would rather carry on fighting. She has a fearless attitude when it comes to fighting, and never backs down, no matter what the opponent. She enjoys fighting, and loves a good challenge, often getting bored with enemies that are easy to kill, and saying things like ‘Didn’t even break a sweat’ almost in disappointment.
Fang can also be sarcastic and teasing, and will often make remarks to dig at a person, but they are almost always said with a smirk. She's incredibly flirtatious too, and is rather smug about causing people unease when she flirts with them although she doesn’t try to cause unease intentionally. She is undiscriminating, and flirts with anything with a pretty face, though her flirting rarely goes further than words and slight touching, at least with people who aren’t Vanille.
Underneath this strong, stubborn, flirtatious young woman, there is a compassionate side. She cares deeply for her party member Vanille, and puts Vanille’s well being well above her own. She would risk everything to save Vanille to the point where she would hurt others to ensure her safety. Because of this deep compassion for Vanille, Fang is very self-sacrificing. She’d rather go through torture—both emotional and physical—than see Vanille be forced to do something she was scared to do. She thinks it is her personal job to keep Vanille safe, and will do what is best for her, even if it hurting her to keep her safe (she abandons Vanille so she can escape a building without getting attacked, taking care of the guards herself, and almost attacks Vanille herself to stop her from throwing away her focus and turning into a monster).
Fang finds it hard to talk in depth about her feelings with people who aren’t very close to her. She doesn’t like to open up very much, and hides her doubt and sadness under her attitude. She doesn’t really know how to articulate what she feels, and often uses physical acts rather than her words (smashing a door when she’s angry or frustrated etc).
Skills and Abilities: As Fang is a l’Cie she has skills that normal humans, both Pulsian and Cocoon Citizens, don’t possess. Usually this mostly focused in magical abilities, but being a l’Cie boosts her strength and dexterity. She has immense strength, and can throw heavy objects and opponents into the air using her spear, and can jump as high as she can throw them to deliver a devastating mid-air attack. She can also use debuffing magic—a type of magic that’s sole purpose is to weaken the enemies’ defences and inhibit their abilities to make it easier for the warriors to slay.
Her weapon of choice is a double bladed lance, which she uses in a jabbing, slashing manner, and is extremely well versed in lance fighting. She can also fight hand to hand when she needs to and she is capable of taking hits that would normally cause major damage to the weaker members of the team.
She can also summon the power of an Eidolon, a magical creature that can be summoned into battle when they are most needed, thanks to the goddess Etro who gives wayward l'Cie Eidolons to help them find their way. Fang’s Eidolon is called Bahamut and uses physical, non elemental attacks, and can transform into a dragon-esque creature who can fly which Fang can ride and unleash devastating attacks from the back of.
Being specifically a Pulse l’Cie, Fang can take the form of the mythological creature Ragnarok in order to ‘bring about the obliteration of Cocoon’. Fang has turned into an ‘incomplete’ Ragnarok several times, not wanting Vanille to have to bear the burden, even though the transformation needs two to be anywhere near strong enough to destroy Cocoon. The creature is insanely strong, and held up an entire planet, dived into magma and killed a ‘God’ in it’s complete form. Fang has no intention of taking this form ever again, but the potential is there if she is made angry and is desperate enough for salvation. It’s hideously unlikely though.
